Women Professionals in Government (WPG) was founded in 1981 by Mary Dipboye a graduate of the University of Houston with a Masters Degree in Public Administration. After taking a government relations job at Houston Lighting & Power (now Reliant Energy), she decided to form an organization for women with careers in government. The organization would offer a network to provide knowledge, skills, and support for career growth. WPG is a 501c3 organization.
WPG (a 501(c)(3) organization), meets on the first Thursday of every month, September through May (excluding January) at a local area restaurant to have lunch, network, and hear an outstanding community leader. The meetings are open to city, county, state, and federal professional women, as well as men, who work in or with government.
WPG provides two scholarship opportunities annually to young women pursuing degrees in government and public policy. In addition to the scholarships WPG provides grant funding to other charities serving women and/or children in Harris County. In May or June, WPG hosts an annual Social to raise scholarship and grant funds.
